Ron
Maslin was an early member of Kanata Theatre. After
KT started, we were due to have a prepared reading of
Chekov's "The Marriage Proposal". It was
organized and rehearsed, but one of the performers hadn't
showed up! A new person who had attended was asked whether
he thought he could sight-read the part. He
"allowed" that he could take a shot at it. Of
course, he knew the play as a classic, and turned in a
wonderful reading. That was our intro to Ron. We had
stumbled our way through theatre techniques, but he KNEW -
he'd actually worked in a theatre in his youth, and he
taught us a lot. Over the years, Ron shared with us his great love
and knowledge of the theatre, both onstage and backstage.
Ron directed, acted, built fabulous sets, designed
programs hand posters, did make-up, and was involved in
many other aspects of Kanata Theatre.
During
the 1980s, Ron initiated and organized a project that saw
many members of Kanata Theatre painting clown faces on
kids of all ages at the Ottawa Ex. Many years and tens of
thousands of faces later, Kanata Theatre had a substantial
sum of money that was invested in a Capital Building Fund
-- a separate savings account for a future theatre that
would be Kanata Theatre's new home! That money from the
Clown Faces program became an important part of Kanata
Theatre's financial contribution to the new Playhouse.
Ron was
also very active in the community of Kanata and was named
Man of the Year by the Kanata Beaverbrook Community
Association.
Ron died
in 1993.
