Kanata Theatre Promises Uproarious Farce
Will Leave ‘em Laughing

by Clare Flockton

Kanata Theatre promises to raise the roof of the playhouse with the fourth play of the season - Caught in the Net - opening this Tuesday night with a Champagne Reception at 7:30 pm and Curtain at 8:00 pm sharp.

This thoroughly funny and modern farce promises to have audiences laughing right from the very start through to the final side-splitting seconds. The frenetic action of the play has been carefully choreographed by director, Rosemary Keneford, who is top of her game in the genre of farce, and will take place on the 7-door complex set, masterfully designed by local Interior Designer, Susan Phillips.

John Smith, played by Brooke Keneford, is married to both Mary Smith played by Jenefer Haynes and Barbara Smith played by Susan Monaghan. For the past eighteen years John Smith has successfully kept these two women from being aware of each other. His life becomes a barrage of wild mishaps and comic calamities when his two teenage children, one from each marriage (Jon Matthews and Natasha Bourk-Wilson) meet over the Internet and are blown away by the similarities of their fathers. They are bound and determined to meet each other and the fun and mayhem that ensues will have the audience rolling in their seats as John Smith falls about trying to keep them apart.

John enlists the help of his best friend Stanley Gardner, played by Barry Caiger, to thwart love's young lust. The characters become magnificently entwined in a web of juicy lies and deceit. So much effort is put into keeping these two teenagers from meeting that anything that could go wrong definitely does go wrong.

If you are looking for a play that is full of laughter and innuendo as well as sheer physical comic relief, then Caught in the Net is a show you must not miss. It runs Tuesday to Saturday from March 29th until April 9th 2005. Tickets for this show are already in high demand and Kanata Theatre is expecting sell out crowds.

You have been asking for them, and now they’re back! That amazing duo, Brooke Keneford and Jenny Haynes – the masters of farce - are at it again! The play is Caught in the Net by Ray Cooney. This hilarious British farce, the sequel to Run for Your Wife, finds our bigamist taxi driver, John Smith, still keeping both his families (one in Wimbledon and one in Streatham) happy and blissfully unaware of each other. But his teenage children - a girl by one wife and a boy by the other - have met on the Internet and are determined to meet in person, since they appear to have much in common. John lunges into a hell-hole of his own making in order to keep them apart.

Keneford and Haynes have appeared together in numerous farces over the years, some of the most memorable being Not Now Darling, There Goes the Bride, Key For Two, Lend Me A Tenor and Moon Over Buffalo to name just a few. The strong comic cast also includes fellow farce veterans Barry Caiger, Geoffrey Holland and Susan Monaghan along with new young talent Natasha Bourke-Wilson, a student at Canterbury high school, and Jon Matthews who has recently wowed them on stage at his school, The Earl of March. Acting as traffic cop and choreographer extraordinaire in this 7-cast, 7-door madcap production is Kanata Theatre’s award winning, master director, Rosemary Keneford.

The play runs Tuesday to Saturday from March 29th until April 9th 2005. If you have not already purchased tickets, don’t miss the sparkling champagne reception on Opening Night at 7:30 pm. Tickets are $15, so hurry down to the Ron Maslin playhouse at 1 Ron Maslin Way (right off Terry Fox Drive). The box office will be open Monday to Friday 5:00 pm-8:00 pm and Saturdays 10:00-noon starting March 14th.
