Noel Coward wrote Blithe Spirit during air raids on London during the Second World War. He felt that something light and frothy would take Britons out of themselves by laughing at people who thought themselves important. A middle class home, a medium and a meddlesome ghost lead to the exciting and giddy conclusion.
