Happy Birthday Dear Alice

Auditions for the comedy Happy Birthday Dear Alice by Bernard Farrell will be held on Tuesday September 5th at 7:30pm in the rehearsal room of the Ron Maslin Playhouse. Please enter at the Stage Door at the rear of the Playhouse. For more information, or if you are unable to make it to the audition and wish to be considered for a role, please contact the director, Gwen Knight (613-592-0744),  before that date.

This production will be presented on November 14th to 25th, 2006.

This play requires six characters:
- three women , whose ages range from 17 to 70 years;
- three men, whose ages range from 30 to 70.

Alice, who is the centre of attention, recalls earlier birthdays and events from her past as she celebrates her 70th.  The time is 1993 and the place is the south of Ireland. Alice moves easily from her thirties to her seventies (without change of costume) and must be able to convey her age through voice and body language alone.

 Barbara, her daughter, was born when Alice was in her thirties.  She lives in San Francisco but makes frequent trips home. She is controlling, high strung, and full of nervous energy. She feels burdened with the responsibility for her mother's care and well being, and is frustrated with her husband's lack of realistic ambition.

 Cormac, Barbara's husband, is in his 40's. He's unrealistic and a dreamer, as he tries to pursue a career in photo journalism.  He is easy going and has an eye for the ladies and, although he is Irish from Donegal, he has adopted a phoney American accent.

 Barry, Alice's son, is in his 30's. He has left his wife and children and is now living in England where he is having an affair with a much younger woman. A salesman by occupation, he is charming and  self centred but has an underlying meanness of character.

 Sandy, Barry's young English girlfriend, is studying reflexology and is a thoroughly "nice" person.  She is in her very late teens or early twenties.

 Jimmy is Alice's friend and a former employee of her late husband.  They are about the same age and he figures prominently in Alice's reminiscences of days gone by.  He provides much of the comic relief in the play as he struggles with his hearing problems.

 Further "guests" are required backstage to support the production, so come out and find out what "role" you can play as we count down to the party.  Anne-Marie Davies Smith is the Producer and Sheryne Lalonde (613 599-6561) is the Director's assistant, so give any one of us a call for further information.
